How to Keep Calm When Life Gets Too Complicated

Learning to develop healthy coping mechanisms in times of stress is an important life skill. You see, we will always have highs and lows regardless of how much we try to keep things steady. That’s why we’re here to give you some tips and techniques on how to maintain a sound mind, body, and spirit.

Nurture Healthy Relationships

It’s always a great feeling when you have a strong support system to be with you through all the ups and downs. So, make a genuine effort to spend quality time with your family and friends, not just in times of joy but even in vulnerability and everything in between.

Exercising Discipline

Always remember to stay true to your values and know when to say no. Say no to the pressures of taking illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, because nothing good ever comes out of having vices.

Make Time for Work, Play, and Mindfulness

Science has shown that short walks in the great outdoors can do wonders for your mind and spirit. So, go ahead and spend time in nature surrounded just by your loved ones, the cool breeze, and the sounds of nature every once in a while.

Appreciate the small things and allow yourself to believe that anything is possible. It also helps to keep a daily journal where you can jot down everything on your mind so you can reflect on your thoughts, track your habits, and count your blessings.

While gadgets, alcohol, drugs, and tobacco seem to put people at ease for a short while, they don’t really work in the long run. These vices simply leave an individual needing more without the benefit of a true relaxation a healthy practice would give. Try deep breathing, tai chi, and yoga, or research new activities that have a positive effect on the mind.

Stay Healthy Inside and Out

Getting the right amount of quality sleep gives you the emotional and physical capacity to make good decisions and have a more positive attitude. You should also limit your caffeine intake to a single cup of your favorite coffee or two caffeinated ones, so you get a good night's sleep and keep feelings of anxiety and agitation at bay.

Exercise sends oxygen to every cell in the body, so your brain and body operate at full capacity! Try to build a fun routine you truly enjoy, and maybe try to stick to your program with a workout buddy.

The key is to associate the word “diet” with wholesome food choices and not with restrictive portions. Fill your diet with a nutritious balance of fruit, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains for a good dose of energy that lasts you the whole day.
